Creating Electronic Storybooks
Yukon Native Language Centre Audio Storybooks -
This page not only has audio storybooks in all the Native
languages of the Yukon and some from Alaska & elsewhere,
but also tells most everything one needs to know to create one's own.
These books are said to have been created using Adobe Fireworks.
Virtual Pagination Script - This tool or one like it was used to create
the Dual Language Showcase's collection of virtual books.

  • Also, in developing proficiency in a language, it is said that there should be lessons/activities designed to elicit language at increasing levels of sophistication. For example, if one were to gauge the level of language in the texts in the above digital collections, where might one place them on a continuum from beginner to fluent speaker?

Identity Texts

  • Proud to be Bilingual/Bicultural Essay Contest - At the suggestion of Moses Dirks, our essay contest has focused on students creating texts that focus on "local heroes", those in one's community that provide role models of ways to be, but who may never be found in history books.
  • Dual Language Showcase - this collection of identity texts was developed through a collaboration between teachers, researchers, parents & students at Thornwood Public School, an elementary school in a suburb of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Although the texts lack sound like those from YNLC, they are student generated and provide another model for the creation of electronic bilingual storybooks.
  • Bonny Norton of the University of British Columbia gives a talk on the identity and identity texts The presentation contains a number of very interesting samples of identity texts (oral & performed as well as written) from Uganda, including local heroes, as well as information about the theory of identity texts and the role they play in socializing language learners into target language communities.
  • Afghan students learn to read with folktales - This project uses traditional texts to develop literacy and also to develop identity texts collected from the community.
